Sea Shells at Summers End

Reaching the end of Summer is not welcomed….

Although Florida has warm weather year-round it still saddens me when Summer ends because our “weekly” beach excursions becomes “maybe monthly”  until next Summer.

I always manage to bring home beautiful sea shells each time we go to add to our collection.

But when your shell collection results in too many for one container to hold, then it’s time to divide and conquer with creative ways to use your shells in home decorating.

Here are a few simple ideas I’ve done that were inspired by the many shell lovers I follow and admire.

Apothecary Jar and candle ring:

Clam Shell filled with white sea shells:  Clam Shell purchased from AtHome Superstore

Add Starfish which are actually Christmas Tree ornaments from AtHome Superstore.

Create a Shell Tray:

I strongly recommend using GE II Silicone Sealant that is clear and water proof instead of hot glue.  For the base I stacked shells and used a large Bay Scallop Shell turned upside down for the tray top.  Then painted the inside with a little sparkle.

To create an Orb:

Start with a Styrofoam or rubber ball.  Add shells until you like what you see. Super simple DIY

A Sea Shell Tassel.

Drill small holes at the tips of Alphabet Cone Shells and use monofilament wire to tie together.  The same way I drilled in making the wind chime shown here.   Drill a hole at the top and bottom of a large Knobbed Whelk shell.  Tie the tassel to the bottom hole and create a wire hook to insert in the top hole.

Why not replace the clapper and center string of an old wind chime with your new sea shell tassel

Plant accents:

One I really like is a simple placement of a few on the side of your house plants.

Lantern fillers:

Fill a floor lantern with larger shells, center a large flameless candle and use tiny stones instead of sand.

Table lantern vignette:

This lantern was a steal from Goodwill for $3.99 the bottom sticker was still on from Ross at $17.99.

After cleaning I painted the top and hardware silver metallic but left the white distressed. I was tickled how it came out.

I will be putting this lantern to good use.  The flameless candle and small shells turn out cute

but I’m thinking of using a film on the glass in a tropical scene and use this lantern it to hide the back yard bug spray. 🙂 I really, really dislike seeing bug spray sitting out. I’m always putting it under tables and chairs. Now I can give it a place where it’s quick and easy to find. 🙂 It would be similar to this:

Now that the sea shell DIYs are finished…it’s time to relax and enjoy a dream view.    Bye-Bye Sea Shore Until next Summer….

Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy the rest of your Summer.

Give up Silk Flowers?…NEVER! A Tropical Trio

Happy Mid-June…Can you believe Summer is here!

Time for a quick and easy DIY  Tropical Summer Floral Arrangement.

Silk flowers are never “Faux Pas” to me.  For natural realistic looking silks my best advice is to buy as an investment.   Spending a few dollars more on quality silk stems is well worth the extra cost.

My DIY inspiration for a small tropical arrangement came from Petals.com

Protea & Torch Ginger Accent
Artificial Flower Arrangement

Price: $79.00  This small tropical arrangement is perfect for my small sofa back table.

I gathered the tropical stems I already had: Most stems I purchase from Petals.com, Hobby Lobby,  Michaels and JoAnn’s.

To keep them looking new when not in use I wrap them in cotton pillow cases then store them in plastic to keep out moisture and dust.  Once in an arrangement I dust them weekly with a feather duster.  Wipe, if needed with baby wipes. 🙂  Silk floral spray cleaner is also good to use for a quick fresh clean.

I had to improvise with what I had:

To mimic the black river rocks in the inspiration arrangement I used a small blue glass jar (once a candle) to sit inside a larger glass bowl. 🙂

I wrapped a foam cube with tropical leaves (I did not want any white foam showing).   Then with a drop of hot glue on the bottom of the jar I inserted the wrapped foam into the blue glass jar.

I inserted each stem into the foam with hot glue.  Finished it with a little moss between the stems.  Then placed the arrangement in the glass bowl.  A super fast and simple DIY.

A Tropical Trio

 $79.00 vs. $0.00

Minor change: I switched sides of the Red Ginger and Heliconia (aka: Lobster claw).  I also did not want to cut the stem of the Red Ginger any shorter. (ya never know, I may need to use it again for another seasonal refresh) Who would guess these flowers are more than 10 years old.  In my opinion, silk florals are not faux pas, they are forever lasting beauty.

Great things I love about quality silk florals:

  • Silk flowers actually have a polyester blend which helps keep their shape and helps them from fraying
  • Real touch silks are made of a liquid polymer soft coating. The look and feel is 100% realistic, high quality and more expensive
  • Fill a floral tube with your favorite fragrance and insert it among the leaves
  • Mix them with natural/real flowers for an added boost
  • They won’t wilt when used for hot weather outdoor events
  • No worry for allergies
  • Reusable
  • No matter what season, they are always in bloom

My other arrangements are still a delight from last year. (for the full post click on the title or picture)

Spring Outdoors -My Happy Place

Are you making any changes to your outdoor living space for Spring?  I’m refreshing our patio for Spring using  simple changes with pillows and cushions.

Love that word “refresh” pertaining to decorating.

Thanks goes to Jamala of  VivaLaVintage For Your Home who used that term on her Guest Room Refresh shown here.

Last year I wanted a feeling of Hawaii for the patio shown here in Aloha.

Aloha Pillows and Cushion

Aloha Pillows and Cushion

But this year I wanted a Tropical Safari feel. I was inspired after viewing this video of the  Singita Pamushana Lodge  in Zimbabwe. The color palette of Black and White, Teal, Blue, Green, Yellow I thought was beautiful and bold.  See more of the Villa here

singita-pamushana-villa-8

singita-pamushana-villa-2

Not only the color palette but the villa itself,  is absolutely breathtaking.  I know I can not replicate any part of the furnishings or decor but the color palette I can certainly try.  Also, I must say, if you want a feeling of an African Safari Adventure, if ever in Florida get a chance to visit Disney World’s  Animal Kingdom Lodge.  We have dinner there from time to time at  Jiko – The Cooking Place.  Just walking thru their incredible lobby and out to the Savannah is well worth it.   My beautiful grand-daughter.

I was very lucky to find all the fabric prints I wanted for the cushions and pillows at Hobby Lobby. All on sale.  Zebra Print from $17.99 to $4. and Tropical Prints $4 a yard. Leopard print marked from $29.99 to $7 a yard.   Yay, I was a happy camper.Fabric for Patio cushions

Our outdoor living space is my happy place!

Terra Cotta fountain

I am completely stress free when I am outdoors surrounded by nature. Hubby took two old terra-cotta planters to create a water fountain after the other leaf fountain took a nose dive. He was able to save two metal leaves to use as well.  Great Job!  The sound of the water is so relaxing.

We truly want to be comfortable when enjoying our patio.  It will always be a work in progress. Items come and go.  But it’s amazing how changing the pillows, adding a few accessories really makes a welcome change. A nice re-fresh.

Our Breakfast Bistro Table:Elephant Centerpiece

white-elephant This elephant I gave to my mother as a gift on her 90th birthday. She collected elephants. After her passing it was gifted back to me.  I dressed him up with beautiful flowers and a tassel throw. Having it here reminds me when Mom and I would share time outdoors soaking up the sun.

Also, by the way, Z Gallery has a ceramic elephant bowl selling for $59.95. Shown here. I’m thinking I really, really need this one. 🙂 ceramic-elephant-zgallery59-95

TropicalSafaritablerunnerThe runner combines the fabric prints on the front and the reverse side is solid leopard print.  We prefer using white hand towels for breakfast outdoors.  For us we find that they are larger, more absorbent and easier to clean than white linen napkins. Pillows are 18″ square.

 pouf ottoman   leopard ottoman pouf

The pouf ottoman I made to serve two purposes, to hold the extra breakfast goodies and to kick up your feet to digest that big breakfast. 🙂  It has a bottom zipper closure to remove for cleaning.  I’m pleased with the outcome.  I used Amy Butler’s honey bun pouf pattern for the top panels and changed the sides for height.  Measures 22″ diameter X 15″ high.

SafariTropicalSetting

Just to give this area a little extra spirit I draped the cabana door with a quilted table/bed runner that I made years ago shown here in On the Wild Side.  🙂

Without the runner on the door

Well, I can’t forget about the doggies. They have a large tropical cushion to relax too.  I’m sure changes will be made especially to the cabana door, maybe bamboo or iron ??  Maybe an outdoor rug.  Wouldn’t it be great to add African wild animals statues and artifacts !!!

At the end of the day sitting watching the sun go down with a refreshing light cocktail always makes a pleasant day complete.

SafariTropicalvignette2I have a few more touches to this sitting area that I’m considering….with pottery, palms, new garden stools, rug, hanging lanterns ..etc.

SafariTropicalVignette

I love seeing little pockets of interesting vignettes in outdoor spaces.  If you get a chance I’d love for you to stop back by and see a video on my Favorite Vignettes for Outdoor Living Spaces.

Well that’s it for today. Thanks for stopping by.  Gotta go, the Sun is setting…know what that means. 🙂

Enjoy your Week.

Sweet Sensations

If you crave chocolate and want a sweet relaxing taste sensation have a Chocolate Martini.

Chocolate lovers and tini- lovers …You know how I feel.   I have to admit I’ve enjoyed my share but my favorite is a chocolate martini.  Dark or Vanilla doesn’t matter…It’s chocolate!  I had to satisfy my cravings for sweet chocolate while relaxing this week-end.  This was indeed the prefect answer.  My simple quick recipe for a Not-so-Vanilla Chocolate Martini:  ChocolateMartinirecipe

  • 2 oz. of Vanilla Vodka.
  • 1/2 oz. White Cream de Cacao
  • 1 oz. Godiva Chocolate Liqueur (for Vanilla Martini use Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur)
  • mix ingredients in a shaker with ice and strain into martini glass
  • If you have chocolate syrup, swirl into glass before straining drink
  • garnish with cherry

So simple, Sooo sweet.  Sip and enjoy.

Martinis are sensuous sexy cocktails and I have to admit when I’m mixing martinis this is how I see myself, in my mind’s eye….

but my sweet chocolate Martini taste sensation is satisfied!

Too funny.

Later as the week-end continued…I went shopping Talk about Sweet deals, I was all over the place.

My last stop was Goodwill and found a pair of candle holders for $7.00.  Heavy, solid, made in India, 10″ and 12″ tall.  Perfect to use for the outdoor bistro table.  1264sweet-dealsSince the weather was so nice on Saturday I decided to do a little faux gardening.

For this Sweet modest centerpiece:  The pitcher I’ve used many times.  Also shown in Pitcher Perfect Collection.  I filled it with a few Amaranthus stems from Michaels Crafts on sale at $2.99 each. 1272sweet-sensations-martinisunday

I went to Pier1Imports to purchase another beaded pillow in order to have a matching set.  But of course no longer available!  So off to JoAnn Fabrics. Which means I’ll have to do some sewing.

I love to sew, but this week-end I wanted to give it a rest. I found this embellished fabric. On sale at 50% off, plus a small remnant at 75% off the sale price. Not bad.  I made two lumbar pillows and have enough fabric left for 2 more.1284pillowfabric

Silver Dollar Centerpiece for January

Happy New Year. Hope you are enjoying the start of a new year!

After the holiday decorations are put away what do you do if you want a Winter centerpiece without it looking like Christmas?

I decided to use the tree branches I saved from Tree branch Candlestick and Another tree branch décor idea.

Hubby brought out the saw and sliced two branches for a runner for me:

To secured it I attached a board to the bottom with wood glue, and sprayed it with polyurethane.  After spraying it I was not pleased with the coloring but I carried on.  Maybe if I keep it, I’ll go back and stain it.  I scattered glass stone to fill the gaps.

Next for the candle holders, he drilled holes for the tea-lights and cut them to a nice height.

tealightholes

I tried my hand at painting again… for a Birch Bark effect and for the centerpiece branch drilled holes for the silver dollar floral stems. treebranchcenterpieceAdded the finishing touches:

During the evening with the Chandelier lights, the Silver Dollars really come to life with an iridescent pearl quality.  Silver Dollar BirchBark CenterpieceNow that I look at it, I’m not sure if this centerpiece is better suited for Spring or Winter??  C’est la Vie,  I think I’m done with the tree branches!  This was just my way of preserving the branches and the love I have for my favorite old Oak tree.   Taking what was, preserving its memory and making something new, was a fun and worthy project for me.

Check out Jo-Ann’s January sale on florals,  it’s great.  With coupons the stems cost less than a silver dollar. 🙂  (too funny)

Enjoy your week-end.  Thanks for stopping by…  signature

Silver and Gold for Christmas

I hope everyone is enjoying the Christmas Holiday Season. We love this time of year for so many reasons.

Deciding on a centerpiece for the season was challenging because there are so many beautiful festive colors and themes.  Keeping it simple to last thru-out the winter months with very little editing was my goal.

“If you only say one prayer in a day, make it Thank You”
